Rydal Mount

Visit Rydal Mount and Gardens,
the historic family home of William Wordsworth.

About Rydal Mount

Rydal Mount, in the heart of the English Lake District, lies between Ambleside and Grasmere and commands glorious views of Windermere, Rydal Water and the surrounding fells. This was William Wordsworth’s best-loved family home for the greater part of his life, from 1813 to his death in 1850 at the age of 80. The house, which was a focus for romantic literature, continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family and retains the feel of a lived-in family home.

What Customers Say About Rydal Mount

Beautiful home of literary signficance, accessible by bus!

This was a special treat to visit! Easily accesible from a bus stop (which was very helpful for us traveling without a car!) The home is beautiful with many articles of furniture, etc which belonged to Wordsworth. I especially enjoyed looking out the windows at the views and seeing the gardens.

Little gem, must see.

We really enjoyed our visit. Due to early hours we had a lot of privacy so we could slowly go through every room in the house enjoying the atmosphere. Gardens were amazing, something hidden on every corner, beautiful flowers and plants. Starting from warm welcome from a lovely lady, walking through old walls, learning about lifes and interesting facts, ending with a walk around. Must see!

Must see Lake District landmark

A fantastic must see visit in the Lake District. We took the bus to Rydal Mount and saw the untouched house which gave a great insight into Wordsworth’s latter life.

Magical and timeless

This was such an interesting and beautiful place. The guide was well-informed and the house is packed with books, letters, photos, pictures and many of Wordsworth’s possessions. The garden is gorgeous. It has a wild feeling and around every corner, you find another delightful aspect. We loved it.

Rydal Mount a great experience full of history and nostalgia

We were really impressed with the amount of authentic memorabilia, the information from the poets own hand. Also the notes of his sister Dorothy which inspired plenty of William's work. The house was spacious and light, and in every nook and cranny more information to add to the experience. We used public transport from Keswick to get there, and there was a good footpath above Rydal to walk back to Grasmere.
